NY : Third Highest Need, Second Least Participation - County Board Urging Saratoga Residents To Fill Out Donor Cards

An estimated 600 New Yorkers die each year waiting for an organ transplant that did not arrive in time, and more than 10,000 New Yorkers are waiting for an organ transplant, representing the third highest need in the nation. On Tuesday, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors will pass a resolution urging county residents to fill out their organ donation cards at the DMV as well as at the Board of Elections.

New York State ranks 51st out of 52 States and territories (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) in the United States for donor registry enrollment. More than 50 percent - more than 124 million - are registered donors, according to a Donate Life America annual update released in September.

Montana leads the nation with an 86 percent donor designation share - the total number of designated donors as a percentage of all state registrants age 18 and older. New York has approximately 3.6 million adult donor designations – or a 23 percent donor designation share - ahead only of Puerto Rico.
